Chair of flamenco

origin of flamenco and beyond

The  defining characteristics for flamenco such as  tonal “modulations” and “melismas”, may come from Islamic monochord songs; Other researchers see a clear uprooting creation of the gypsy people that are encountering their ancestry in India.
The origin of Flamenco should be traced on January 12th 1425,  were the first “Gypsies”  who came through Zaragoza from India having a “cedula de passage” issued by  King Alfonso V of Aragon “El Magnanimo” (1416-1458).for a period of three months.

After the hardship of persecution the Pope allowed them indefinite to remain credentials mingling with an early impressive Hispanic society that soon shifted in hostility.

Hispanic Literature gives a predominant role on Miguel de Cervantes  novel,  “La Gitanilla” of 1613 depicting a young dancer in style. Also, we should notbe missing the pre-existing culture upon the arrival of the “Gypsies”, both the psalms of Jewish culture, Muslim songs and popular Mozarabic songs.

In flamenco harmony is produced by the guitar using series of chaining chords creating a tonal and melody by singing. Originally there were three different tones, the Andalusian with cadence, major and minor mode. Joined together flamenco guitar player, singer, and dancer create sequences called “ostinatos” that charcterize each style.

Ostinatos were commonly used on 16th and 17th centuries such as zarabande and chaconne both of SouthAmerican origin. This is just drawing the crisol path of development of the genre adding other  rhythms canarios, parades, vacas, folias, jacaras, or danceable fandangos. On the 19th century, a tonal system emerged reminding the first original flamenco uses to accompany melodies giving that type of oriental touch provided by the Phrygian mode.

However, flamenco had a very poor appreciation depicting foreigners Spanish identity vile and retarded but authentic keeping their own signature. Flamenco then encapsulates three opinionated sectors of furious elites feelings of shame of a general declining shared by the Catholic Church, left-side intellectuals and people. This is the outbursting panorama  covering the Restoration to the civil war period. The later industrialisation and International Exhibition allowed different layers of culture to emerge becoming inspirational for avant-garde artist. Great artist and researchers like Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca elevate this form of flamenco to “high culture”, and Blas Infante, the father of Andalucia modern homeland resuming on his book “Origenes del flamenco.”

In 20th century the traditional gypsie singing was very critical and with the opening of new opera flamenco devices staging in theatres,  and performing halls. Thus, for everyone  flamenco become popular outside Spain for being a meaningful cultural transformation for Spanish artists and intellectuals. This transformation represents mestizo and a symbol of legacy, pretty much similar journey for African-American jazz and blues aided their popularity in the United States.

Flamenco genre has received and is being an influence for African, Caribbean, Mexican, and other musical styles and fussion.
